Swan Lake
IN DUBLIN. except, not really. As I was walking by the ticketmaster outlet, I was perplexed that a) Swan Lake was displayed on the screen (where only big gigs go) and b) that it was sold out and c) that I hadn’t heard it coming from miles away. Turns out there is a Russian Ballet company of the same name. FALSE ALARM. Spencer Krug fans may sit back down.

Song of the year?
I was trying to think of my favourite song of the year. Obviously, it was “Southern Point” by Grizzly Bear, but that track wouldn’t be something I’d say in a poll because my vote wouldn’t have any influence. So, these are my top scrobbled tracks according to last.fm of songs released in 2009. Grizzly Bear / Southern Point Calvin Harris / Ready for the Weekend Bruce...

The 37 Awesomest Songs of 2009 (Paste) →
electricollection: The album really died for me this year. It’s supposed to have been dead for years, and I held out longer than a lot of people, but this year my enthusiasm for individual tracks officially dwarfed my enthusiasm for full-length albums. I can only name eight 2009 albums I really love, most of which I’ve written about before. So today, for anyone who’s interested, I’m rattling...

'Final Fantasy' now known as 'Owen Pallett'
“Owen Pallett chose “Final Fantasy” because playing solo “was reminiscent of the hours and hours I had spent as an adolescent playing those epic JRPGs,” but “laws of trademark infringement exist for good reason,” so he’s reverting to his given name. Heartland is out 1/12.” — Stereogum Argh. Will need to update my tags.

Guest blog on Stereogum by Frog Eyes and Swan Lake band member, Carey Mercer about the gag order required by all artists performing at the Games to sign that prevents them from being critical of the event: “The artist shall at all times refrain from making any negative or derogatory remarks respecting VANOC (the organizing committee), the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Olympic...

The Antlers--in review
I was worried that when the gig sold out, I wasn’t going to get in, however; I was bailed out by the guestlist + 1. The Antlers played an absolutely stunning and musically brilliant gig with slightly edgier versions of their tunes from Hospice, with pronounced post-rock-esque interludes between songs. Though I would have preferred “Two” to be a bit less rocky and more intimate...

Fleet Foxes to become hippie jam band
crumbler: From Tom Breihan’s interview today with Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes: I think it will just be a different feeling instead of mellow. But positive— it will just be a different feeling from that. Different chord shapes, some extended. On the first record, I kind of wanted to avoid any extended grooves. But there’s definitely a couple of those coming in now, where the guitar part...
